10 expert tips on launching a successful fitness habit

This article launches the spotlight series on wellbeing, featuring interviews with health and wellness professionals who provide valuable advice, based on their extensive experience and knowledge. On this theme, I invited 28-year old Alvaro de Vicente Contreras to kick-start this series.

A native of Grenada, a city in southern Spain’s Andalucía region, Alvaro de Vicente works as gym manager at Holmes Place in Lausanne, Switzerland. Holmes Place is an international chain of higher-end fitness studios that operates in 10 countries.

“Why Switzerland?”

“Skiing brought me to Switzerland.”

I hadn't considered that people would ski in Spain.

“There’s skiing in Spain?”

De Vicente reminds me that Andalucía is home to the Sierra Nevada, and to Mulhacén (3,479m), the Iberian Peninsula’s highest peak.

“Where else can you ski with a view of the Mediterranean as well as Africa on a clear day?”

He had a point.

His passion for ski culminated in helping to organize a world cup race in Andalucía.

De Vincente’s involvement in sports began during his teens. He loved to ski, play football, run triathlons, practice Judo, and go mountain biking. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Sports and Physical Sciences from the University of Granada.

Now, he says his strength is observing technique—especially running—and analyzing how people move and exercise, which has helped his clients in the personal fitness training business for the past four years. It’s no wonder he earned the Holmes Place “Values” award.
